Quick answers to
essential questions.
New solutions to long-standing challenges inevitably create questions. That’s only natural. We have a data-first mindset, we’ve thoroughly documented our solution and test results. We’re ready to answer any questions you have.
Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions. For more specifics, we encourage you to explore our Documentation Portal where you can find Performance Reports, Application Notes, etc. Or send us your questions Contact.
Iontra’s custom mathematic approach enables us to use the results of the battery cell/pack characterization, as well as information on the current and voltage of the battery to provide the perfect charge back to it. This results in unrivaled current uniformity at the surfaces of the battery electrodes preventing plating and dendrite formation. This is the key to safely enabling faster charger, longer life, and cold weather charging. This allows products with Iontra technology to charge the battery with much more control and much less damage.
Iontra’s innovative Charge-Control technology can also be layered on top of common charge solutions such as step or pulse charging. As an example, if you have a preferred step charge protocol, Iontra can maintain your average current steps, while also taking advantage of our technology’s performance capabilities.
It means we always back our performance claims with third-party validated data and our own robust test data. It’s part of our transparency commitment. We have multiple validation reports from internationally recognized institutions such as UL Solutions (UL), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Novonix, and the University of Michigan.
That’s what’s so unique about it – Iontra makes charging safer. No other charging solution offers the level of performance that Iontra’s technology can achieve while maintaining the safety and integrity of the batteries. We prevent plating and dendrite formation on the electrodes, minimizing damage and thermal runaway risks. We have proven this on many commercial batteries and are happy to provide data.
CCCV is the most basic form of charging and is still used by some applications today. However, more effective charging methods such as DC step charging, or charging based on physical and electrochemical models are now becoming commonplace. For example, DC charge profiles, such as step charging – commonly used today in smartphones and products limited by anode surface potentials – are starting to be used in pending EV models. There are also AC charging techniques such as pulse charging and sine wave charging. All existing charging technologies are based on physical and electrochemical models; none of them account for how the energy moves through the battery as a whole.
Iontra’s charging technique takes into account this energy movement, a field called electrodynamics. This is unique in the industry and is pioneered and patented by Iontra.
The process: Iontra takes customers’ batteries/cells, tunes the charging algorithm into that specific battery cell/pack and places that Charge-Control recipe/algorithm combination onto application-specific MCUs to control the charge delivery. This results in the maximum performance possible, given the physical design of the cell; our technology produces 2x the charge speed, and 2x the cycle life compared to our the best performance our customers can get today with other charging such as step charging or P2D-based adaptive charging based on electrochemical and physical models.
Iontra technology reduces the wasted potential of all Li-ion batteries by making them perform better and live longer. As the world becomes more and more dependent on batteries to power wearables, devices, and cars, Iontra has a direct impact on sustainability efforts by enabling more efficient use of batteries and extending their life. This can directly lower recycling needs and costs, as well as raw material usage therefore lowering the carbon footprint for our customers. We also help the use-and-recycle ecosystem to be more efficient and productive.
We see almost unlimited possibilities: any product or system that uses rechargeable batteries, from transportation, power tools, communication, wearables, industrial robots, home/commercial appliances to energy storage systems, and many more. Products as large as an Electric Vehicles (EV) and large industrial drones, or as small as a digital watch, will benefit from smarter, safer charging with Iontra technology.
Yes, minor hardware changes are often required to accommodate changes in current and voltage management. Iontra engineers are ready to work with your team to ensure the process is seamless and quick. Click below to learn more about Iontra technology and implementation.
Iontra is ready to move as fast as you need. Customers typically have product development cycles of 2–3 years, from the initial start of work to a full production ramp. Some applications are faster such as smartphones and other consumer electronics. Automotive product development can be longer.
