Position Summary:

The Battery Analytics and Testing Team at Iontra is seeking a Battery Scientist who will play a key role in implementing Iontra’s proprietary charging algorithms by designing, executing, and analyzing experiments that drive improvements in battery performance. This role is responsible for leveraging advanced electrochemical methodologies to identify charge time, cycle life, and safety improvements for a wide range of battery chemistries, form-factors, and applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Li-ion batteries, electrochemistry, and materials characterization, with hands-on experience in experiment design, cycling equipment, and statistical methods such as DOE. This position offers a unique opportunity to directly influence product development and customer engagement while contributing to the next generation of energy storage technologies.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Utilize advanced R&D methodologies to identify potential improvements in battery cycling.
  • Design and execute long-term cycling experiments to generate robust, reliable datasets.
  • Interpret electrochemical data to derive actionable conclusions and inform product development.
  • Perform advanced data analysis and modeling to support experimental findings.
  • Analize battery material characterization data to assess structural, chemical, and performance-related properties, and integrate findings into overall electrochemical analysis.
  • Collaborate closely with the R&D team to enhance Iontra’s technology and optimize processes for improved performance and scalability.
  • Prepare clear, detailed reports and presentations to communicate results internally and externally.
  • Deliver technical presentations to customers, supporting product adoption and technical collaborations.

You’ll Need These Qualifications:

  • PhD in a hard science field or Masters in a hard science field with 2+ years of non-academic experience
  • Rechargeable battery experience: 3 years
  • Electrochemical and materials characterization: 3 years
  • Strong background in Li-ion battery systems and electrochemistry.
  • Hands-on experience with designing cycling experiments and long-term testing.
  • Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology.
  • Expertise in battery material characterization techniques.
  • Experience with laboratory cycling equipment such as Neware and Maccor systems.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex datasets and communicate findings clearly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including customer-facing presentations.

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Formal DoE methodology: 1 year (nice to have)
  • Applied research: 4 years (preferred)
  • Design and conduct independent “ad hoc” experiments: 3 years (preferred)
  • Coding experience


Benefits and Compensation:

Salary Range: $90,000- $110,000  (salary is based on education, experience, skillset, and market value).

Position Summary

The Algorithm R&D Group at Iontra is seeking a Battery Algorithm Engineer with strong expertise in electrochemistry, mathematical modeling, and algorithm development for lithium-ion and emerging battery technologies. This person will design, implement, and optimize charging, discharging, and state-estimation algorithms to advance Iontra’s battery performance capabilities. The role requires hands-on data analysis, modeling, and simulation work, as well as collaboration with software, hardware, and test engineering teams to translate research outcomes into product-ready solutions.

Your work will directly impact Iontra’s mission to deliver safer, faster-charging, and longer-lasting batteries for applications ranging from consumer electronics to electric vehicles and grid storage.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Further develop lithium-ion battery charging and discharging strategies within the company’s existing algorithm framework and evaluate the impact of various strategies on battery aging.
  • Collaborate closely with the embedded systems and software teams to enhance the fuel gauge (SOC/SOH) estimation algorithms within the company’s established framework and integrate these algorithms with charging/discharging strategies into the battery management system (BMS) implemented on chips, to meet customer product requirements.
  • Design and executed experiments with Iontra’s battery cyclers (Deimos and Phobos) to validate algorithm performance.
  • Optimize the company’s existing cell characterization methods and extract and analyze large sets of test data.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (Analytics, hardware, embedded software) to bring R&D concepts into production-ready code.
  • Contribute technical documentation, patents and design reviews.

You’ll Need These Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in battery modeling, control algorithms, or related areas (academic or industry).
  • Strong understanding of battery fundamentals (electrochemistry, degradation mechanisms, thermal behavior).
  • Expertise in mathematical modeling and control theory applied to dynamic systems.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Python for modeling, simulation, and algorithm development.
  • Solid foundation in statistics and data analysis for experimental validation.
  • Experience implementing and debugging algorithms using test equipment and large datasets.
  • Familiarity with machine learning approaches applied to battery performance and lifetime prediction.

Desired Qualifications (or ability to develop)

  • Experience with embedded systems (C/C++), real-time control, and firmware integration.
  • Knowledge of Kalman Filters, Extended Kalman Filters, Particle Filters or advanced estimation methods.
  • Exposure to AWS services (SageMaker, Lambda, Athena, Quicksight) for large-scale data handling.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, including ability to present technical work to cross-functional teams.
